What is included when hanging, finishing, texturing, and painting new drywall?
These are distinct stages and should be listed separately. Hanging covers board selection, layout, fastening, openings, and required backing or assemblies. Finishing covers tape, corner treatment, successive compound coats, sanding, and the specified finish level. Texture is an additional surface treatment; primer seals and equalizes the substrate; paint supplies the final color and sheen. Protection, dust control, cleanup, and disposal also need an assigned scope.
The proposal should identify wall and ceiling areas, board type, finish level, texture sample, primer, number and type of paint coats, color responsibility, lighting conditions for inspection, and who corrects framing or trade damage. “Ready for paint” does not mean painted, and “texture match” does not guarantee an invisible blend on an aged surface.
How long does drywall repair take?
A basic patch may require several visits or drying stages even when the hands-on work is short. Backing and board are installed first, followed by tape and successive compound coats, sanding, texture, primer, and paint as applicable. Setting-type compounds can shorten some stages, but temperature, humidity, patch size, finish level, texture, and paint requirements still affect the schedule. A seamless result should not be rushed by trapping moisture under finish coats.
Ask for elapsed time as well as labor time, and confirm when the room can be used, cleaned, primed, and painted. If the opening was caused by a leak or electrical problem, repair the source and verify the assembly is dry and safe before closing it.
Does drywall repair include texture matching and painting?
Not automatically. Drywall patching, texture matching, priming, and painting are separate scope items unless the proposal explicitly includes them. Texture matching requires identifying the existing finish, reproducing its pattern and scale, feathering beyond the patch, and accounting for previous paint buildup. Even a technically good patch can remain visible because paint sheen, age, batch, lighting angle, or a localized touch-up differs from the surrounding wall.
A clear quote should say whether it includes texture, primer, color matching, corner-to-corner or full-plane painting, and protection and cleanup. For critical smooth-wall or Level 5 surfaces, inspect the repair under the room's normal grazing light before final acceptance.
Can holes from TV, speaker, camera, or low-voltage work be repaired invisibly?
Many access openings can be made visually unobtrusive, but no ethical contractor should promise invisibility before evaluating the finish, lighting, wall history, and location. The best result begins before the cut: choose a repairable location, make a clean opening, preserve useful material when appropriate, protect wires, and photograph concealed conditions. Proper backing, flat board placement, wide feathering, compatible texture, primer, and paint blending then determine how well the repair disappears.
Grazing light, glossy paint, aged texture, wallpaper, decorative plaster, and previous repairs make perfect matching harder. When the finish is especially sensitive, the least conspicuous solution may be repainting an entire wall plane or using an intentional access panel where future service is likely.
Can a smart-home retrofit be completed without drywall damage?
Often much of a retrofit can be completed with little or no visible damage by using attics, crawlspaces, closets, existing conduit, baseboards, cabinetry, and carefully selected wireless devices. The answer depends on construction, fire blocks, insulation, masonry, ceiling type, device locations, and performance requirements. Avoiding every opening can force poor speaker placement, unreliable wireless links, exposed wire paths, or equipment that is difficult to service.
A professional walkthrough should compare three options: concealed wired installation with selective repair, a hybrid wired/wireless design, and a no-cut design with its limitations. Agree on permitted access locations and finish expectations before work begins. Small planned patches are often less compromising than designing the entire system around inaccessible framing.
What happens if damaged drywall is wet or moldy?
Stop the moisture source and assess the affected assembly before patching it closed. Wet gypsum, insulation, framing, and cavities can support mold or lose structural integrity; cosmetic compound and paint do not solve the cause. EPA homeowner guidance emphasizes drying wet materials within roughly 24 to 48 hours when possible and removing materials that cannot be cleaned or dried appropriately. The response depends on the source, affected area, duration, occupants, and hidden conditions.

Does drywall repair require a permit, and what about pre-1978 paint?
Routine cosmetic drywall repair often does not require a building permit, but associated structural, fire-rated, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work may. Scottsdale explicitly lists drywall repair among permit-exempt work; Phoenix and other jurisdictions should be confirmed for the exact scope and address. Never use a cosmetic-repair exemption to conceal unpermitted electrical or other regulated work.
Paid renovation that disturbs painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing may also fall under the EPA's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. Applicability and small-area exceptions are specific, and contractors must not assume that a minor-looking patch is exempt. Confirm permit requirements with Scottsdale, Phoenix, or the applicable municipality, and confirm lead requirements through the EPA's RRP program.
