Are smart switches better than smart bulbs?
Smart switches or dimmers are generally better for permanent ceiling fixtures because they preserve familiar wall control and prevent someone from accidentally disconnecting power to the smart lighting. Smart bulbs are useful when individual color control is important, in plug-in lamps, or where replacing a wall control is impractical.
The two approaches must be coordinated. A smart bulb behind a conventional switch becomes unreachable when the switch is off, and many smart bulbs should not be connected to an incompatible dimmer. Switch selection also depends on load type, wattage, neutral availability, multi-location wiring, and dimming requirements. For a whole home, consistent keypads or dimmers usually create a more intuitive experience than dozens of separately managed bulbs. Test the exact lamp-and-control combination for low-end dimming, flicker, buzz, color consistency, and recovery after power loss.
Do smart switches need a neutral wire?
Many smart switches require a neutral conductor because their electronics need continuous power even when the light is off. Some controls are specifically designed to operate without a neutral, but they may have minimum-load requirements or different LED compatibility. Lutron explains why neutral-based controls can improve continuous power and load performance in its technical guidance.
Do not identify wiring only from insulation color or a photograph. Older homes, remodeled circuits, multi-location controls, and crowded boxes can have unexpected conditions. A qualified electrician should verify conductors, grounding, box depth, load type, and circuit condition. If no neutral is available, options can include an approved no-neutral control, adding a neutral, relocating the device, or using a compatible centralized solution.
Will smart lights work if the internet goes down?
Properly designed smart lighting should retain essential local control during an internet outage. Wall switches, dimmers, keypads, and locally processed scenes should continue when the lighting processor and local network remain powered. Remote access, offsite app control, cloud automations, and cloud-dependent voice assistants may be unavailable.
The exact result varies by product. Some consumer bulbs depend heavily on cloud services, while professional lighting systems generally emphasize local control. Ask whether schedules and scenes execute in a local processor, what happens if that processor fails, and whether each room retains usable physical controls. Power loss is separate; electronic controls still need electricity and should return to a defined state after restoration. Test internet loss, controller restart, and power restoration during commissioning.
What is the difference between RadioRA 3 and HomeWorks?
RadioRA 3 fits many professional retrofit and whole-home lighting and shade projects; HomeWorks is intended for larger, more customized residences with deeper wired/wireless architecture, extensive keypad and shade requirements, and greater scale. Do not choose by house square footage alone. Count loads and devices, review existing wiring, decide whether centralized panels or local dimmers are appropriate, identify shade and Ketra requirements, define integration and keypad aesthetics, and allow for future expansion.
