The short answer

Screen a room for golfer, swing, enclosure, launch-monitor, projector, and circulation fit before committing to a simulator design.

A comfortable full-swing simulator often starts near 10 feet high, 14–15 feet wide, and 18 feet deep, but those are planning references rather than universal minimums. TrackMan currently recommends 15 feet or more of width, 10 feet or more of height, and 18 feet or more of depth for its simulator experience; other launch monitors and enclosures publish different hitting zones, screen distances, sensor offsets, and mounting heights.

The decisive test is whether every intended golfer can make an unrestricted swing at the planned hitting position while the selected screen, enclosure, launch monitor, projector, lights, doors, and circulation paths all retain their required space. This calculator screens those relationships and labels its assumptions. It cannot certify a swing envelope: mark the layout at full scale, compare it with current product drawings, and complete controlled slow-motion swing checks before construction or purchase.

Measure the finished clear room—not the plan label

A room listed as 15 by 20 feet may deliver less usable space after wall finishes, acoustic treatment, cabinets, baseboards, screen stand-off, enclosure framing, and rear circulation are installed. Ceiling height must be taken at the lowest point the club can reach, including beams, ducts, garage hardware, fans, lights, sprinklers, sensors, projector mounts, and the launch monitor itself. Record separate measurements wherever the room changes shape.

The calculator assumes rectangular clear dimensions and therefore cannot see a column, angled wall, raised platform, or door swing unless you identify it. Treat its result as a fit screen, then lay the design out at full scale. Manufacturer-recommended room dimensions provide valuable benchmarks: TrackMan lists 15-plus feet wide, 10-plus feet high, and 18-plus feet deep as recommended, while Carl's Place similarly describes 10 feet or more of height, 14 feet or more of width, and 18–20 feet of depth as a recommended starting range.

The golfer and club create a personal swing envelope

Golfer height is a useful warning signal but not a complete predictor. Club length, posture, backswing plane, follow-through, speed, mobility, and the tendency to move toward or away from the ball all change the volume a swing occupies. Two golfers of the same height may need different overhead and side clearances, and a driver generally creates a more demanding envelope than a wedge.

That is why this calculator never labels a room safe solely from height. The final layout should be marked on the floor and ceiling, then checked by every intended adult golfer with controlled, slow-motion swings while another person watches from outside the swing area. Stop immediately if the club approaches any surface or device. Children, guests, unusually tall golfers, and players with a more upright or energetic swing expand the verification group.

Width determines centered versus offset play

A centered hitting position supports a balanced screen image and makes it easier to accommodate both right- and left-handed golfers. Narrow rooms often shift the hitting position away from center so a golfer's body and club have more room on the backswing side. That can work for one dexterity, but it changes screen aim, projector geometry, enclosure protection, launch-monitor coverage, and the usable swing area for the opposite-handed player.

The calculator treats 14–15 feet as a comfortable planning range for centered, mixed-handed use because current manufacturer guidance clusters there, not because every system requires that exact width. TrackMan explicitly describes its minimum width as dependent on swing comfort for a single-dexterity, off-center bay. If the room is narrower, choose the actual golfer and launch monitor first, map the offset, and verify the complete club path and product hitting zone rather than simply centering the mat in the leftover space.

  • Both dexterities: favor a centered hitting zone and generous width.
  • Single dexterity: an offset can recover swing room, subject to equipment and screen geometry.
  • Protect side walls and exposed structure throughout the possible shot cone.
  • Keep spectators, seating, and controls outside every player's swing envelope.

Depth is shared by the screen, ball flight, sensor, and people

Total depth is not just the ball-to-screen distance. The impact screen needs the stand-off and rear clearance specified by its manufacturer; the hitting position needs a safe screen distance; radar systems may require measured flight in front of the ball and operating space behind it; the golfer needs backswing and circulation room; and the rear of the room may also contain doors, seating, a computer, or a second row.

TrackMan publishes 8 feet 2 inches from screen to ball as a minimum reference for its simulator while recommending an 18-foot room overall, and its documentation says specific depth needs vary by solution. Foresight's Falcon guidance places the center of the mat about 10–12 feet from the screen and about 4 feet from the overhead unit. These are product-specific examples, not interchangeable rules. Select the launch monitor and enclosure, then build the depth stack from their current drawings.

Ceiling equipment can solve one problem and create another

Overhead launch monitors free floor space and can support both handednesses, but each model has a specified mounting height, offset from the tee, hitting-zone geometry, network or USB connection, power requirement, and structural attachment. Projectors likewise have model-specific throw distance, image size, lens offset, brightness, and mounting clearances. Placing either device wherever structure happens to be available can put it in the swing, cast shadows, miss the hitting zone, or distort the image.

Foresight's Falcon guidance, for example, describes an ideal ceiling range of 9.5–10.5 feet and a model-specific relationship among the screen, hitting mat, and sensor. That does not apply to every overhead unit. Before rough-in, overlay the selected launch-monitor drawing, projector calculation, lighting plan, HVAC, sprinklers, acoustic treatment, and swing envelope on one reflected-ceiling plan. Unknown products or unfinished ceiling plans are a professional-verification trigger.

  • Use the exact current installation manual for every ceiling-mounted device.
  • Confirm structure, power, data, ventilation, and service access.
  • Keep projector light out of the golfer's eyes and avoid body shadows on the image.
  • Coordinate safety padding without blocking sensors, air devices, or required access.

Complete a marked fit test before construction or purchase

Tape the screen plane, enclosure depth, hitting zone, launch-monitor position, projector, doors, seating, and circulation paths at full scale. Use hanging markers to represent the lowest ceiling devices and side obstacles. With the area clear of other people, have each intended golfer rehearse short clubs and then longer clubs slowly, watching the entire club path from address through follow-through. The test should confirm comfort as well as literal non-contact.

Professional simulator design is warranted whenever dimensions are below the selected manufacturer's recommendation, the room must support both handednesses in limited width, the ceiling has obstructions, the space is multi-use, a garage door system occupies the ceiling, acoustics or impact noise are sensitive, or the launch monitor and projector are not yet selected. A passing calculator result does not approve structural attachment, electrical work, fire protection changes, impact containment, or product compatibility.

  • Verify the tallest, most upright, and most energetic intended swings.
  • Test doors and movable equipment in every normal position.
  • Compare the marked plan with current enclosure, launch-monitor, and projector documents.
  • Preserve a clear no-entry zone around the golfer during use.
