As of August 2026, published U.S. consumer cost data places professionally installed motorized window treatments across a very broad range of roughly $400 to $2,500 per opening. Standard roller shades can fall toward the lower portion, while large openings, designer fabrics, specialty treatments, concealed pockets, new wiring and whole-home integration can move above it. Public manufacturer starting prices may cover a particular shade configuration without representing a complete installed system.

What this planning range includes

The estimator treats each independently moving treatment as an opening and considers the shade or drapery, motor, mounting hardware and a broad allowance for installation. It then adjusts the planning band for size, treatment type, fabric level, power and architectural complexity. Connected control introduces system-wide items such as a bridge, processor, keypads or programming that do not scale neatly one-for-one with window count.

The range does not assume that every opening is identical, and it is not a substitute for a takeoff. It excludes repairs to windows, paint and drywall restoration, structural changes, hazardous-material work and other conditions that cannot be evaluated here. Taxes, freight, regional labor, promotions and product availability can also change the result. The range is most useful for comparing scope choices, not for selecting a contractor by a single projected number.

Window size and treatment type set the mechanical requirements

Width, height and fabric weight determine the tube, motor torque, brackets and possible deflection limits. A small roller shade and a floor-to-ceiling opening may share a fabric family while requiring different mechanical systems. Very wide glass can need a larger tube, coupled shades, multiple bands or a specialty solution. Corner conditions, jamb depth and door hardware can further constrain what fits.

Treatment type also changes the assembly. Roller and cellular shades package differently from Roman shades, wood blinds, horizontal sheers and drapery tracks. Lutron’s current residential portfolio, for example, spans roller, cellular, Roman, tensioned, blind and drapery options with different available dimensions and power approaches. Verify every opening against the selected manufacturer’s current size and application limits before assuming one solution can be repeated throughout a home.

Fabric affects daylight, glare, privacy and price

For roller shades, openness describes the proportion of open area in a screen fabric; it is not a simple privacy score. More open fabrics can preserve view and admit more daylight, while tighter weaves generally reduce view and solar exposure. Color, weave and exterior brightness all affect the experience. At night, an interior light source can make a light-filtering fabric far less private than it appeared during the day.

Room-darkening performance depends on the complete assembly, not only a fabric label. Light can enter at side gaps, above a roll or around a sill. Side channels, dual shades, fascia and pockets can improve control while adding material and coordination. Order physical samples, view them against the actual glass in daytime and after dark, and confirm that adjacent shade bands use the same approved dye lot when visual matching matters.

Wire-free and wired power solve different project conditions

Battery or wire-free motors can make an existing-home retrofit practical because new cable does not have to reach every opening. The tradeoff is a maintenance plan: battery type, access, expected replacement interval and behavior as voltage declines should be understood for the exact product. Tall or obstructed windows need a safe way to service batteries without damaging the shade or furnishings.

Low-voltage wired power is often attractive in new construction or a major remodel, especially for many shades or hard-to-reach openings. It requires early coordination of cable type, power-panel location, home runs, labeling, pockets, blocking and service access. Do not close walls around an unapproved generic wire assumption. Use the selected shading manufacturer’s current wiring documentation and coordinate power with the shade designer, electrician and automation team.

Controls, pockets and installation shape the finished experience

A shade can be controlled by a local button or remote, a mobile app, schedules, voice or a whole-home automation scene. Decide which controls should still work if the internet is unavailable and where wall controls belong before finishes are complete. Group commands around how the room is used—such as glare control, privacy and away mode—rather than making residents hunt for individual shade names.

Architectural details often separate an ordinary installation from an integrated one. Fascia can conceal a roller; a recessed pocket can make the shade disappear; side channels can reduce light leakage; blocking can support the assembly without questionable anchors. Each detail changes dimensions and trade coordination. Accurate field measurement remains essential because out-of-square openings, trim, handles and uneven surfaces may not be obvious on architectural drawings.

Three ways the same window count changes the plan

For six accessible, standard-size roller shades with essential fabric, wire-free motors and local controls, the planner will favor the lower portion of the dated $400-to-$2,500-per-opening consumer range. Multiplying that published range creates an intentionally broad $2,400-to-$15,000 starting envelope before project-specific adjustments. It is a budget conversation, not an expected proposal amount, and actual products can fall outside either end.

The same six openings move upward when they are oversized, require room-darkening channels, use designer fabric, need new low-voltage wiring or must join whole-home scenes. A larger project may gain installation efficiency while adding control infrastructure and programming. As another public reference point, Lutron advertised Triathlon Select roller shades starting at $599 for qualifying sizes in August 2026; a starting product price does not establish the cost of a measured, installed and integrated system.
