What is Thread?

Thread is a secure, low-power IPv6 mesh networking protocol built on IEEE 802.15.4 radio technology. It provides an IP transport for connected devices such as sensors, locks, lights, shades, and controls, while application layers including Matter define the commands and device behavior carried over it.

How Thread works in a connected system

A Thread network contains a leader role, eligible routers that relay traffic, and end devices, including sleepy devices designed for low battery use. Roles can change as the network adapts; the leader is not necessarily a permanent hub or single traffic choke point. A Thread border router connects the mesh to adjacent IPv6 networks such as home Ethernet or Wi-Fi without translating each application through a proprietary gateway. Multiple compatible border routers can improve reach and resilience when they share the intended Thread network credentials, but separate vendor-created Thread networks may coexist instead of forming one mesh. Thread uses network credentials and commissioning processes that must be preserved securely. Thread is not another name for Matter. Thread supplies low-power IP networking; Matter can use Thread as one transport and defines device interactions above it. Other application protocols can use Thread, and Matter can also operate over Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Does every Thread device extend the mesh?

No. Router-eligible powered devices can relay traffic, while sleepy battery end devices normally conserve energy and depend on a parent. Exact roles are selected by the network and product capability, so endpoint count alone does not prove strong coverage.

What is a Thread border router?
