Rack Unit is the standard vertical measurement used to describe rack space, written as U. One rack unit equals 1.75 inches, or 44.45 millimeters, of nominal mounting height. A device labeled 2U occupies twice that vertical increment, subject to its actual chassis and installation clearances.
How Rack Unit works in a connected system
Rack-unit counting makes equipment elevations predictable, but it describes height only. Two components with the same U rating may have very different depth, weight, rear connectors, airflow, shelf requirements, or mounting-hole patterns.
