What is SSID?

SSID is the Service Set Identifier, the human-readable name used to identify a Wi-Fi network to clients. Access points advertise or otherwise use an SSID so phones, computers, televisions, and connected devices know which configured wireless service they are attempting to join.

An SSID is a label, not the wireless hardware or security mechanism itself.
