What is PoE?
PoE is Power over Ethernet, a family of standards that lets compatible network equipment deliver direct-current power and Ethernet data across the same balanced twisted-pair cable. It commonly powers access points, cameras, touchscreens, intercoms, phones, and control devices from a central switch.
How PoE works in a connected system
Standards-based PoE uses detection and classification so power-sourcing equipment can identify a compatible powered device and negotiate an appropriate power level. Can PoE damage a laptop or other non-PoE network device?
Standards-compliant power-sourcing equipment performs detection before applying normal power, so an ordinary compatible Ethernet endpoint should not be energized. Unknown passive injectors or proprietary wiring may behave differently and should be identified before connection.
Why does a PoE device restart even though its data link looks good?
Possible causes include an undersized total budget, per-port limit, voltage loss, poor termination, heat, startup spikes, switch policy, failing power supply, or endpoint fault. Data connectivity alone does not prove stable power at the device.
