What is Encoder?

Encoder is a device or software function that converts incoming audio and video into a coded signal or IP stream for transport, routing, recording, or processing. In AV-over-IP distribution, each source commonly connects to an encoder before entering the managed network.

How Encoder works in a connected system

The encoder negotiates the source format, accepts picture and sound, applies the system’s compression or packetization, and sends a stream with identifying information. Its settings determine resolution, frame rate, color, audio, bitrate, latency, and network behavior within supported limits. It may also manage EDID presented to the source and participate in HDCP authentication. Some products provide HDMI loop outputs, USB, control ports, or local preview, but these are optional.
